Re: 63 Nassau Street
Dear Chair Tierney,
I write to urge you to designate 63 Nassau Street, a cast-iron-fronted building attributed to James Bogardus, one of the most important figures in the history of cast-iron architecture. Built c. 1860 in the “sperm candle” style, this early cast-iron building is a rare survivor in Lower Manhattan, and is an incredibly important architectural resource that deserves to be landmarked.
Although no foundry mark has ever confirmed that 63 Nassau Street is indeed a Bogardus building, the evidence overwhelmingly points to the fact that it is. Margot Gayle who supports landmark designation points out that 63 Nassau Street exhibits a number of stylistic characteristics of other remaining Bogardus buildings in the city:
The cast-iron façade contains many pieces of ornament found on other Bogardus buildings. In fact, the façade of 63 Nassau Street is nearly identical to the Bogardus-designed building at 85 Leonard Street, and it includes medallions of George Washington and Benjamin Franklin which appeared on three other Bogardus buildings. There are only three other Bogardus buildings remaining in New York City ( 254 Canal Street, 75 Murray Street, and 85 Leonard Street), and this is the only one not protected as a landmark. I urge you to protect this building, one of the earliest surviving cast-iron buildings in the city, without delay.
Sincerely,
